A little over a month ago, my dear husband Andy lost his job.
To say it was a massive shock would be the understatement of the year (he’d worked for the SAME company for 25 years).
This was one turn of events we did not see coming.
To put this into context: Andy’s wages account for roughly half of our combined expenses each month. That includes things like household bills, business expenses, living money, etc.
Or, put another way: roughly half of our monthly income has disappeared, pretty much overnight.
Or, put another way: I have to SERIOUSLY step up my game.
Until he finds another position, my business is now our sole wage-earner.
I am insanely grateful that my business has the capacity (and the foundations) to support my family even in the face of a situation like this.
But it’s not going to be easy.
After I had my initial meltdown (which thankfully didn’t last long), I gave myself a serious pep talk.
“Are you in this…or are you IN THIS?”
There’s such a fine, fine line between being a spectator…and being a PARTICIPANT.
Here’s the difference:
- Being in this means taking the easy option. Being IN THIS means stepping up to the plate.
- Being in this means chasing perfection. Being IN THIS means being willing to take risks, and make mistakes.
- Being in this means giving it a go. Being IN THIS means an impeccable work ethic.
- Being in this means giving in to your own excuses. Being IN THIS means ignoring your own excuses.
- Being in this is half-hearted. Being IN THIS is full on, do-or-die.
- Being in this is giving a little. Being IN THIS means giving it ALL you’ve got.
- Being in this means letting fear pull you down. Being IN THIS means rising above the fear.
Sometimes, it takes the disappearance of a safety net to remind you what kind of level you’re in
I am an all-IN, all-I’ve-got participant in the growth of my business.
What level are you in at?
